SOF-T Gen 5 Tourniquet
Brand: SOF
Structurally almost identical to its predecessor SOFT Gen 4, but unlike it, it has a proper tightening indicator — a red triangle located under the windlass and sewn into the strap. It signals that the slack in the tourniquet strap has been sufficiently eliminated. This is crucial for correct tourniquet application and reduces the number of windlass rotations required to stop bleeding.
Description and Purpose
The SOF-T Gen 5 tourniquet is designed for emergency arterial or venous bleeding control on limbs in tactical and civilian environments. Thanks to the tightening indicator, the user receives visual confirmation of proper strap tension, which increases the reliability of tourniquet application under stress and in low visibility conditions.
Key Features
- No Velcro, making it the tourniquet of choice when application in water is necessary.
- Can be applied to a limb as a loop or unbuckled, which speeds up its application, especially on a leg.
- Structurally more complex for self-application compared to other types of tourniquets.

Recommendations and Remarks
After purchasing the tourniquet, change the factory packaging and place the tourniquet in a closed pouch or first-aid kit, minimizing contact with the environment. Carrying tourniquets in factory film can complicate their application.
The 5th generation (NSN: 6515-01-696-4522) of the SOFT tourniquet has not been included in TCCC recommendations. The 3rd and 4th generations (NSN: 6515-01-587-9943) remain recommended.
A critical drawback has been observed in this generation: the tourniquet can accidentally unbuckle when the buckle is struck (which can happen when moving an injured person).
When to choose SOF-T Gen 5
This tourniquet is suitable for users who need a model without Velcro for use in wet conditions or during water-related activities. It will also be useful in situations where speed of application on the leg is important due to the buckle or the ability to quickly apply a loop. At the same time, it is worth considering the increased complexity of self-application and the reported risk of accidental unbuckling when the buckle is struck.
Operating Tips
- Always remove the factory packaging before placing the tourniquet in a first-aid kit or pouch.
- Practice tourniquet application technique with the windlass during training and check the tightening indicator's function. Consider TCCC recommendations when selecting a tourniquet generation for specialized use.
