What is a cordless sander?
A cordless sander is a portable power tool designed for leveling, stripping, smoothing, and polishing surfaces. It is most often used for working with wood, metal, plastic, stone, or putty.
What is a cordless sander used for?
A cordless sander is used in the final stages of working with material, preparing it for painting or varnishing. It also effectively levels putty and cleans the edges of plastic parts. Models of different shapes are also used for various types of work: round ones are good for countertops and facades, triangular ones are for easier access to frame corners or between slats. For thick rust and rough welds, cordless angle grinders are needed, as a sander's abrasive disc cannot withstand the loads involved.
Types of cordless sanders
Cordless sanders come in different types:
- Orbital (eccentric): the pad vibrates simultaneously with rotation. It is used for final fine sanding.
- Angle model uses grinding or cutting discs for rough stripping, metal, and stone processing.
- A vibrating (random orbital) sander produces small oscillations of a rectangular pad. It is ideal for processing large flat surfaces and corners.
- A belt sander uses a continuous belt that rotates in a loop. It is used to remove thick layers and level material.
- A delta sander has a triangular pad and is designed for working in hard-to-reach areas.
Cordless sander characteristics
A cordless sander has the following important characteristics:
- Voltage: 12 V is ideal for small jobs and hard-to-reach places; 18 V/20 V are universal models; a 36 V (or 2×18 V) model provides professional power for rough processing of hard materials.
- Capacity. Recommended range: 4.0 to 5.0 Ah.
- Motor type. A brushless motor is better, as it provides greater power and reliability, with up to 40% longer runtime per charge.
- Speed control allows adapting the tool to different materials.
- Dust extraction efficiency. The presence of a dust bag or a port for connecting an AirLock system or similar is critical for health and cleanliness.
Recommendations for choosing a cordless sander
When choosing a suitable cordless sander, the type of material is the starting point. For old paint, choose abrasive P40–P80, then switch to P120. Before varnishing wood, use P180–P240 grit. It is not recommended to use a fine disc immediately on a rough board, as the disc will quickly lose its effectiveness due to dust buildup.
Keep in mind that a cordless sander should rest flat on the surface under its own weight. For grooves and shaped edges, cordless routers are used, and then small cutting marks are removed with sanders.
