What is a ladder?
A ladder is a portable structure with steps for climbing to a work area. It is used when you need to reach a ceiling, cornice, light fixture, facade, top shelf, or rack.
The basic structure of a ladder is simple: side rails hold the steps, supports provide stability, and fasteners prevent sections from collapsing under a person's weight.
Types of ladders
For an apartment, a stepladder is often chosen because it unfolds into two supports and does not require a wall. A leaning ladder works by resting against a solid surface: a wall, facade, or tree. A multi-section ladder has several sections and is suitable for various heights. A telescopic ladder is shorter when folded, and a transformer changes its shape to several positions.
Ladder characteristics
Important ladder characteristics include height, material, weight, number of steps, and permissible load. An aluminum ladder is lighter, while a steel one is heavier but often more rigid.
Before choosing, check:
- working height for a specific mounting point;
- load capacity of 120–150 kg or more according to the specifications;
- step width;
- anti-slip pads on the feet;
- quality of locks and hinges.
How ladders work
A ladder relies on proper weight distribution. For a stepladder, the load is distributed over two spread-out parts. For a leaning ladder, the angle of inclination is important. If placed almost straight, the top might slip. If too low — the feet will slide.
What are ladders used for?
Ladders are needed for changing light bulbs, installing shelves, painting, working with ceilings, accessing racks, and pruning branches. When renovating a bathroom or kitchen, tile cutters cut tiles to size, and a ladder provides access to the top row and slopes.
In what areas are ladders used?
Ladders are used in everyday life, repairs, construction, shops, workshops, and warehouses. Before drilling near the ceiling, a craftsman needs wire detectors to avoid hitting cables under the plaster.
Recommendations for choosing a ladder
A ladder is chosen based on the working height and the surface it will stand on. For a room, a light stepladder is sufficient. For a facade or high ceiling, a leaning, telescopic, or multi-section model is needed. If you need to accurately measure the distance to a beam, opening, or mounting point, laser rangefinders can help.
Where to buy a ladder?
When you need to buy a ladder, first check the working height, profile material, load capacity, weight, and fasteners. For a ceiling of 2.5–3 m, a household stepladder is usually sufficient. For a facade, high garage, or warehouse, a longer multi-section structure is needed. At Flash Army, ladders are chosen based on these parameters, along with tools for installation and marking.
