What is a construction mixer?
A construction mixer is a tool for mixing thick repair compounds. It is used to prepare tile adhesive, plaster, putty, cement mortar, paint, primer, self-leveling floor, and lightweight concrete. A construction mixer differs from a drill in that it has lower RPMs, higher torque, and handles that won't be ripped from your hands when working with heavy mixtures.
How a construction mixer works
A construction mixer has a motor that spins a paddle in a bucket or tank. The attachment pulls the mixture up or down, breaks up dry lumps, and evens out the consistency. For adhesive, extreme speed is not necessary: 300–600 RPM usually yields better results because the solution doesn't incorporate excess air.
What is a construction mixer used for?
A construction mixer is purchased to speed up mortar mixing, as mixing with a trowel takes more time and doesn't make the mixture as uniform, and a drill starts to overheat. Tile adhesive, plaster, grout, and screed must be free of dry lumps, otherwise the material will adhere poorly to the base. Tile cutters are often used with mixers, as mixing and tile cutting are closely related stages during tiling.
Types of construction mixers
There are single-paddle and dual-paddle models. A single paddle is suitable for adhesive, paint, putty, and mixtures up to 30–40 liters. Dual paddles handle thick mixtures better and rotate the container less. For a workshop where drilling machines are already present, more powerful models with a metal gearbox are often chosen.
Construction mixer specifications
When choosing, consider specific factors:
- Power: 1000–1200 W for adhesive and putty, 1400–1800 W for plaster and heavier mortar;
- RPM: approximately 300–800 RPM, preferably with speed control;
- Attachment: M14 thread, paddle diameter 100–160 mm;
- Gearbox: a metal housing handles loads better;
- Convenience: two handles, soft start, button lock.
Recommendations for choosing construction mixers
For an apartment, a medium-power single-paddle model is sufficient. For plastering, frequent adhesive mixing, or working with thick concrete, you need a powerful motor and a proper paddle. If the renovation involves ceilings or facades, ladders should be selected along with the tool, as work will not only be near the floor.
Where to buy construction mixers?
When buying a construction mixer for adhesive, plaster, or concrete, you need to consider the mixing volume, mixture consistency, power, attachment fitting, and complete set. A cheap model without sufficient power quickly overheats, and an overly heavy tool is inconvenient for minor repairs. Tools for mixing, tile cutting, and installation can be conveniently selected from Flash Army products when you need to cover several work positions without searching in different places.
