Soft ballistic protection for military personnel

Soft ballistic protection is a lightweight, flexible system designed to stop fragments, pistol-caliber bullets, and other low-velocity threats. The core of such armor is a ballistic package – a multi-layered block made of high-tech materials such as Kevlar or other aramid fibers. Soft ballistic packages are used both as part of body armor and as inserts in combat uniforms or equipment.

Protection classes of ballistic packages

Depending on the threat level, a ballistic package for body armor or a plate carrier has a specific protection class. In Ukraine and NATO countries, NIJ standards are most commonly applied:

Soft armor protection levels (NIJ):

  • IA — basic level: withstands 9mm and.40 S&W bullets.
  • II — designed to stop 9mm and.357 Magnum.
  • IIIA — protects even against powerful.44 Magnum and high-velocity 9mm; the most popular option for soft body armor.
  • III — counters rifle cartridges, including 7.62×51mm NATO.
  • IV — provides maximum protection, stopping armor-piercing rounds like 30-06 M2 AP.

In combination with hard plates, soft ballistic protection forms reliable protection of level III/IV — against automatic weapons and armor-piercing ammunition.

Features of soft ballistic protection

The main advantage is flexibility and lightness. A soft ballistic protection package does not restrict movement, making it especially suitable for operatives, pilots, artillerymen, and medics. Other advantages include:

  • Low weight, reducing fatigue during prolonged wear;
  • Ability for concealed carry under uniform;
  • Protection against fragments, which is critical in modern warfare.

Differences in materials and purposes

The materials from which soft ballistic packages are made can vary:

  • Kevlar — classic aramid fiber, proven over years;
  • UHMWPE (ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene) — lighter and more moisture-resistant;
  • Hybrids — a combination of different layers to balance weight and effectiveness.

Each material has its own application: one configuration for assault operations, another for medics or crews.

How to choose soft ballistic protection?

To buy soft ballistic protection, consider:

  • Area of application (front line, rear, security);
  • Desired level of protection;
  • Compatibility with existing body armor or uniform;
  • ·Need for additional hard plates.

Frequently asked questions about products in this category Soft ballistic protection for military personnel

Soft ballistic protection consists of flexible ballistic inserts that are placed into a vest, cummerbund, belt, or neck, groin, shoulder, or side protection modules. Unlike an armor plate, it is not rigid, conforms better to the body, and does not restrict movement as much. It is typically used for protection against fragments, ricochets, and some pistol threats, depending on the class, material, and number of layers.
A ballistic package is a soft protective element inside a cover. It consists of several layers of ballistic material assembled into a single block. The package itself stops shrapnel or a bullet within its class, while the cover only secures it in the desired position. Such packages are made for specific areas: side, groin, neck, shoulders, waist, or for a full-size vest.
Soft armor is most often placed on the sides, neck, shoulders, groin, lower back, lower abdomen, back, and other areas not covered by hard plates. In DSTU [Ukrainian national standard], these are precisely described as additional elements of body armor: collar, sides, shoulders, and groin-sacral area. In simple terms: soft armor is needed where a plate interferes with normal movement.
Class 1 is usually chosen when lower weight, thinner profile, and wearing comfort are more important. Class 2 provides a higher level of protection, but at the cost of additional weight and thickness. According to DSTU 8782:2018, Class 1 is designed for threats like 9×18 mm and 9×19 mm, while Class 2 is for 7.62×25 mm. This means Class 2 is stronger, but if the kit is worn for extended periods and mobility is crucial, Class 1 often proves more practical.
Ballistic panels are most often made from aramid fibers or ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Aramid materials include Kevlar, Twaron, Rusar, and other analogs. Aramid excels at absorbing impact energy, while UHMWPE is often chosen for its lighter weight. Combined packages, where polyethylene layers are integrated with aramid, are also available for sale.
Soft armor covers are typically made from Cordura, Oxford, nylon, or dense polyester. The most common options are Cordura 500D and Cordura 1000D. 500D is lighter and slightly more flexible, while 1000D is denser and better withstands rigorous field use. Internally, there may be water-repellent layers, and externally, Velcro, webbing, flaps, or zippers, depending on the module's format.
Most often, these are side ballistic soft armor panels, groin protectors, neck, shoulder, and nape protectors, cummerbunds with soft armor, and inserts for the waist or separate plate carrier modules. Some models are universal, while others are sewn for a specific carrier or a specific cover size. Not only the protection area is important here, but also the shape of the panel, its size, and the method of attachment — for example, with Velcro or into an internal pocket.
The price depends on the protection class, coverage area, package material, cover fabric, and module format. Small inserts for the side, neck, or groin are cheaper. Large kits, UHMWPE packages, modules for specific gear systems, or Cordura 1000D covers are more expensive. Here, not only the price matters, but also how much all this will weigh on you throughout the day.
You can buy soft ballistic protection at the Flash Army military equipment store. It is best to choose it for a specific task: which area needs to be covered, what class is needed, what carrier or cover you have, and whether the product has proper documents - protection class, material, size, and compliance with DSTU 8782:2018.
