What is a glue gun?
A glue gun is a device that helps to bond various materials by heating the adhesive base. A glue gun heats a solid stick and dispenses molten glue through a metal nozzle. The bond sets in a few seconds, so parts do not have to be pressed or held for long. For small decor, it is worth buying a glue gun with a thin nozzle, as it is more convenient than other types of tubes: the glue goes exactly where it is needed and does not spread around the edges.
What is a glue gun used for?
Hot glue is used to attach decorative strips, wires, fabric, cardboard, frames, artificial flowers, and small wooden parts. A glue gun is often used for crafts, toy repair, and model assembly. Hot glue is not suitable for repair work; for long seams around a bathtub or window, sealant guns are used, as hot glue does not replace silicone and does not tolerate constant moisture well.
Characteristics of glue guns
Before choosing a glue gun, you need to consider the following characteristics:
- Sticks — 7 mm for decor and precise application; 11–12 mm for repairs and larger glue flow;
- Power — 20–40 W for short-term home use; 60–100 W — for frequent bonding of large parts;
- Temperature — 120–200 °C, lower for fabric and foam, higher for wood and ceramics;
- Interchangeable nozzle — for corners and narrow gaps;
- Stand — the hot nozzle does not touch the table.
Advantages of using glue guns
A glue gun does not require mixing components. Simply insert the stick, wait for it to heat up, and press the trigger. Hot glue fills small gaps and does not run after cooling. An old bond can be carefully heated and removed; for this, heat guns are sometimes used, setting a low temperature to avoid deforming the plastic.
Recommendations for choosing a glue gun
If you need to buy a glue gun for decor and a few minor repairs, a model for 7 mm sticks is sufficient. If regular use for large-scale work, model assembly, or minor repairs is planned, an 11–12 mm glue gun with heat regulation and a stable stand will be more suitable.
Note that glue will not adhere to dust, grease, silicone, and smooth polyethylene. The surface must be cleaned and dried, and parts should be joined immediately after applying the glue. Unlike glue guns, pipe soldering irons work with polypropylene on a different principle and are not suitable for this type of bonding.
Where to buy a glue gun?
Before buying a glue gun, you need to know the diameter of the sticks: 7 and 11 mm are not interchangeable. Also, check the heating time, cable length, and access to the nozzle for cleaning.
