Car Jack: What Is It For and How to Choose One? 

A jack is a special portable tool that helps lift heavy loads (most often cars) to a small height and then hold them. It differs from other lifting devices by its advantageous placement – directly under the car or any load, as it does not require chains or ropes. 

A car jack is used when changing car wheels, and it is simply an indispensable item for car repair and maintenance. In the construction industry, it allows for lifting heavy structures, and in a situation where a car is stuck, it can be used to pull the car out. 

Types of Jacks:

• Hydraulic: There are 2 types – bottle jacks (compact models that can lift extremely heavy loads but require a solid surface for use) and trolley jacks (ideal for use in car service centers, allowing more maneuverability due to wheels, but require a flat surface);
• Mechanical: These are diamond-shaped (screw) models, which are compact and budget-friendly, but require effort;
• Pneumatic: Work with the help of a compressor or exhaust gases – fast but expensive;
• Rack: Have a rack as the basis of their structure – versatile and convenient;
• Pneumatic-hydraulic: Quite effective and convenient due to the combination of pneumatics and hydraulics.

To properly choose a jack, you need to pay attention to its lifting capacity – it must be greater than the weight of the load (by at least 20%), assess the pick-up height and maximum lifting height, and choose the most suitable drive type.
