Thermal Detectors / Construction Thermal Imagers

Thermal Detectors / Construction Thermal Imagers

What is a thermal detector?

A thermal detector is a device used for non-contact measurement of surface temperature. It reads infrared radiation and shows where a wall is colder, where a connection overheats, or where a pipe, socket, or piece of equipment has abnormal heat. In repair work, a heat detector is used for diagnostics: some problems can be identified before removing finishes or dismantling flooring.

What are thermal detectors used for?

Thermal detectors are used to check windows, doors, radiators, underfloor heating, electrical panels, insulation, and overheating zones. If, after temperature inspection, there is a need to locate hidden wiring, wire detectors are used. This reduces the risk of drilling into hidden cables under plaster.

What tasks does a thermal detector solve?

A thermal detector helps identify cold corners, thermal bridges, uneven heating in underfloor systems, overheated contacts, hidden pipes under surfaces, or areas where insulation performs poorly. For measuring room dimensions, distance to walls, or the size of a problematic area, laser distance meters are useful.

Types of thermal detectors

There are simple infrared models for point measurements, pyrometers with laser targeting, and thermal imaging devices with a display. A heat detector shows temperature at a single point. A thermal imaging camera provides a visual heat map, making it better for inspecting walls, floors, electrical panels, and large surfaces.

Features and advantages of thermal detectors

When choosing, the following parameters are important:

  • Temperature range — industrial ranges are not always necessary for repairs;
  • Accuracy — critical for detecting overheating contacts and pipes;
  • Emissivity — affects readings on different materials;
  • Optical resolution — important for measurements from a distance;
  • Display — simple digital or thermal imaging screen;
  • Memory — useful for checking multiple areas.

Recommendations for choosing thermal detectors

For radiators, windows, and local temperature checks, a simple thermal detector or pyrometer is sufficient. For insulation, underfloor heating, and electrical panels, it is better to choose a model that shows temperature differences across an area rather than a single point. After diagnostics, laser levels help accurately mark areas for repair or installation.

Where to buy a thermal detector?

A pyrometer and a thermal camera should not be treated as the same device. For a radiator, pipe, or electrical contact, a point measurement is enough. For a cold wall, heated floor, or insulation inspection, a thermal image is necessary, as a single measurement does not show the full problem. When choosing a thermal detector, important specifications include temperature range, accuracy, emissivity, display type, memory, and image quality.

When selecting a thermal detector for repair work, it is often followed by marking, drilling, or searching for hidden wiring. In this case, Flash Army is convenient not only for the device itself but also because it allows you to add other measuring tools for the same workflow: distance meters, levels, or hidden object detectors.
