What is a unicycle?
A unicycle is an electric vehicle with one wheel and a self-balancing system. Movement is controlled by body tilt: forward — acceleration, backward — braking, and steering is achieved by shifting the center of gravity. Unicycles are used in the city for trips of 2–10 km when compactness and the ability to move without being tied to transport and parking are important. Often, people choose between electric scooters and unicycles, but the difference is obvious: electric scooters can provide more stable speed and stopping, can travel longer distances, and are more stable.
Unicycle Characteristics
Unicycles are distinguished by parameters that affect stability and traction:
- power — from 500 to 800 W for basic models, from 1200 to 3000 W for speed and climbs;
- battery — 48–84 V, range 20–80 km depending on capacity;
- speed — 20–25 km/h in basic models, up to 40–50 km/h in more powerful ones;
- diameter — 10–14 inches for compact models, 16–18 inches for better stability on uneven surfaces;
- weight — 12–25 kg, affects portability;
- balancing system — electronics that maintain vertical balance and react to weight shifts.
How do unicycles differ from other electric transport?
A unicycle has no handlebars, and all interaction is through balance. This requires practice but provides high maneuverability in the city. Compared to electric scooters, control is more difficult at the start, but the vehicle itself is more compact.
Unlike unicycles, electric bicycles and electric scooters provide stable balance and control, but take up more space and are not designed for carrying.
Advantages of a unicycle
A unicycle takes up minimal space and does not require separate storage. It can be brought indoors or onto public transport without preparation. In the city, this provides a mobility advantage, especially for short routes. In terms of cost, it is one of the simplest electric transport options: battery charging instead of fuel and minimal maintenance.
Recommendations for choosing a unicycle
The choice depends on the user's weight, route, and terrain. For beginners, models with moderate speed and a medium wheel diameter are suitable for easier balance control. For daily use, range and power are important, otherwise the vehicle limits the distance. A larger diameter provides stability on uneven surfaces but increases weight. However, if you plan long trips, electric scooters are more suitable.
