Fenix HL16 AAA Black Headlamp — Description and Key Features
The functional, reliable, and ultralight Fenix HL16 headlamp is designed for outdoor activities and tourism. Its black body, made of premium polycarbonate, ensures high heat resistance, chemical resistance (acid, gasoline, oils), and impact resistance from drops up to 1.5 meters. The IP66 protection rating guarantees protection against dust and strong water jets. The body dimensions are 64 x 48 x 27 mm, and its weight, including the headband and a full set of batteries, is only 97.2 g.
LEDs and Brightness
The main white Luminus SST20 LED provides a maximum brightness of up to 450 lumens (Turbo mode) with a beam distance of approximately 104 meters. An additional SMD 2835 LED provides red illumination, which is optimal for close-range work without dazzling others. The lifespan of both diodes exceeds 50,000 hours. The headlamp body features a 60° tilt mechanism for precise light direction at the desired angle.
Operating Modes
The headlamp has six operating modes, divided into two groups: four white modes and two red modes.
White Illumination
- Turbo: 450 lumens – 2700 candela – 3 hours – 104 meters;
- High: 150 lumens – 846 candela – 8 hours – 58 meters;
- Med: 50 lumens – 261 candela – 27 hours – 32 meters;
- Low: 5 lumens – 24 candela – 100 hours – 10 meters.
Red Illumination
- Constant Light: 5 lumens – 10 candela – 6 meters – 100 hours;
- Flashing Light (SOS): 5 lumens – 10 candela – 6 meters – 200 hours.
During prolonged operation, the body may heat up; if the temperature rises to 65°C, an intelligent control system activates, gradually reducing power to cool the electronics.
Control Features
The model is equipped with two separate buttons on the top of the body: the right button controls the white modes (on/off and switching), and the left button controls the red light. Intuitive control logic allows for quick selection of the desired mode.
- White Light Activation: press and hold the right button for 0.5 seconds when the headlamp is off;
- Red Light Activation: press and hold the left button when the headlamp is off;
- Light Deactivation: press and hold either button for 0.5 seconds when the headlamp is on;
- Mode Change: single press of the right (white) or left (red) switch.
It features last-mode memory and an electronic lockout option. To lock, press and hold one or both buttons for 3 seconds; a red light flashing 4 times signals successful lockout. Unlocking is performed by holding both buttons for 3 seconds — the red light also flashes 4 times. In new 2024 versions, lockout is achieved by simultaneously pressing both switches for 3 seconds.
Power Source
Power is supplied by three AAA batteries: alkaline (1.5 V) or Ni-MH rechargeable batteries (1.2 V) are suitable. Li-ion 10440 batteries are not compatible with this model. It is important to install batteries of the same type and brand, otherwise malfunctions may occur. For convenience, the manufacturer includes three Pairdeer alkaline batteries in the kit.
Physical Parameters and Headband
The body is made of polycarbonate, ensuring resistance to aggressive environments and impacts. The structural sealing meets the IP66 standard. The perforated headband, 36 mm wide, has an adjustable elastic length and reflective elements along its entire length for increased visibility in the dark. The headband color is red. The device's weight with headband and batteries is 97.2 g.
