Materials and Construction

The armor plates are made from Armox Advance ballistic steel from the Swedish SSAB concern, with a material hardness of 58–63 HRC at a nominal metal thickness of 7 mm. Each plate weighs 4.2 kg. The front surface of the plate is covered with Ukrainian-made ballistic felt, laminated with a protective PVC film to guard against moisture. The felt is precisely cut and pressed using a several-hour curing method, ensuring strong adhesion to the metal and preventing delamination even after multiple penetrations. Additionally, a unique side edging with a density of 800 kg/m³ is applied, pressed for an hour and a half, which virtually eliminates side core exit upon impact near the plate's edge.

Trauma Mitigation and Shape

On the back of each plate, an 8 mm thick EVA foam damper with a density of 80 kg/m³ is installed. Unlike standard dampers made of foamed polyethylene or rubber (density 30–35 kg/m³), this damper hardly deforms over time and provides better protection against injuries caused by bullet energy transfer. According to DSTU, a Level 5 armor plate withstands hits from: SVD rifle — 7.62 mm rifle cartridge 57-N-323s (LPS) in a steel jacket with a steel core at a speed of 850±15 m/s; AKM 7.62×39 — bullet 57-BZ-231 (armor-piercing incendiary) in a steel jacket with a steel heat-strengthened core at a speed of 745±15 m/s. Note: since 1989, the LPS cartridge has been replaced by the ST-M2 bullet with a 65 HRC core (analogous to B-32, Level 6). Additionally, the plate withstands hits from AK-74 assault rifles with 5.45 mm cartridges type 7N22 and 7N6M.
