Brief Description and Purpose

The "Lightweight BZ" armor plate set offers an optimal combination of weight and strength for mobile users. Each Ukrainian-made plate weighs 3.1 kg and is designed to provide Level 4 protection according to DSTU 8782:2018. The plates are intended for military personnel, law enforcement, and civilians who require reliable protection during active operations.

Materials and Construction

The armor plates are made from Armox Advance ballistic steel by Swedish manufacturer SSAB, with a steel hardness of 58–63 HRC and a nominal metal thickness of 5 mm. The front surface is covered with Ukrainian-made ballistic felt, laminated with a PVC layer for moisture protection. The felt is precisely cut and pressed for hours, ensuring a strong bond with the metal. Additionally, side edging with a density of 800 kg/m³ is applied; the plates are pressed with the edging in a special device and held for an hour and a half to ensure reliable material bonding.

Protective Characteristics

• Withstands at least 1 shot from an AKM 7.62×39 assault rifle with a 57-BZ-231 (armor-piercing incendiary) bullet.
• Meets the requirements of DSTU 8782:2018 Level 4 — withstands SVD rifle and 7.62 mm cartridge (57-N-323s / ST-M2) at a speed of ~850±15 m/s.
• Withstands AK-74 assault rifle 5.45 mm cartridge with 7N10s (speed ~910±15 m/s) and 7N6M bullets.

Anti-fragmentation properties are enhanced by unique lightweight materials of our own design, which minimize the exit of the core and bullet jacket fragments.

Mitigation of Behind-Armor Blunt Trauma

Behind the plate, an 8 mm thick EVA damper with a density of 80 kg/m³ is installed. Unlike standard dampers made of foamed polyethylene (density 30–35 kg/m³), our damper is less prone to deformation over time and better reduces behind-armor blunt trauma upon impact, for example, from SVD-type sniper rifles.

Shape, Dimensions, and Ergonomics

The plate dimensions are standard 25 × 30 cm with an anatomical curve across the width, conforming to the shape of the chest. Cut corners do not restrict movement and allow for comfortable use of firearms. The total thickness of the plate with full coverage is 21 mm. The ergonomic shape and weight of 3.1 kg provide a balance between protection and mobility.

Certification and Testing

Each armor plate has a unique number and production date. Batches undergo testing in a certified laboratory for compliance with DSTU 8782:2018 under normal conditions. Based on the results, a 6-month batch certificate and a test report are issued; these documents are available on the product page.

Additional Advantages and Differences from Ceramic Plates

Unlike ceramic plates, ballistic steel plates are not single-use: they can withstand multiple shots and do not require immediate replacement after the first impact. The behind-armor deformation of ballistic steel is significantly less than that of ceramics, which reduces the risk of rib fractures and internal injuries when used without an additional ballistic package. Ballistic steel distributes bullet energy across the plate's surface, rather than point-wise, which improves protective performance and reduces trauma.
