Fenix HT18R Long-Range Flashlight – Review

The Fenix brand introduces the HT18R handheld flashlight, a powerful device for hunting, camping, and tactical use. This enhanced version of the HT18 model combines exceptional brightness and long beam distance with convenient controls and modern power. The Luminus SFT70 (6500K) LED provides up to 2800 lumens of light and a record beam distance of up to 1100 meters, making the HT18R suitable for both search operations and hunting, where stealth and long-range observation are crucial.

Operating Modes

The interface is conditionally divided into two groups: constant modes and flashing modes. Constant light has four brightness levels, starting from 30 lumens. Flashing modes – strobe and SOS – are designed for emergency signals or tactical tasks.

• High: 1000 lm – 113,000 cd – 670 meters – 2 hr 15 min;
• Medium: 350 lm – 40,000 cd – 400 meters – 6 hr 30 min;

• SOS: 150 lm – 10,000 cd – 200 meters – 40 hr;

Important to note: The runtime in Turbo mode is indicated along with the sequential operation of less bright modes due to the activation of overheating protection. When the internal electronics heat up to 65°C, power is reduced to protect the device, so Turbo mode operates in conjunction with other modes.

Control Features

Control is implemented with two buttons in the tailcap: a tactical button (round) and a functional button (oval). This solution provides quick access to the desired mode and saves time during field use.

• Instant On / Off Constant Illumination: Pressing the tactical button all the way will turn constant mode on or off.
• Momentary Illumination (Instant On): Pressing the tactical button will activate temporary light, which turns off when the button is released.
• Switching Constant Light Modes: A single press of the functional button when the flashlight is on cycles through the modes in the sequence Low → Medium → High → Turbo.
• Instant Strobe: Pressing and holding the functional button when the flashlight is off activates the strobe; the strobe turns off when the button is released.
• Switching Flashing Modes: When the flashlight is on, pressing and holding the functional button activates the strobe, a repeated click switches between flashing modes.

The Fenix HT18R is also equipped with intelligent memory: the flashlight remembers the last constant mode and returns to it upon the next activation.

Power Source and Indication

The HT18R operates on one 21700 li-ion battery with a nominal voltage of 3.6 V. The kit includes a proprietary ARB-L21-5000 V2.0 battery, but ARB-L21-5000U, ARB-L21-4000P, or other batteries of similar size are also compatible. The flashlight's operating voltage is from 3 V to 4.2 V. There is no need to remove the battery for recharging: there is a built-in USB Type-C port near the head of the design.

During charging, a colored indicator lights up on the body: Red – battery is charging; Green – battery is fully charged. Each time it is turned on, the indicator lights up for 3 seconds, showing the approximate charge level: Solid Green 100%–85%; Flashing Green 85%–50%; Solid Red 50%–25%; Flashing Red 25%–1%.

Physical Parameters and Design

The body is made of high-quality A6061-T6 aluminum alloy with a HA III anodized finish, protecting against oxidation and corrosion. The anti-abrasive coating and durable metal construction withstand mechanical impacts and multiple drops from a meter height. The presence of an O-ring and a plug on the charging port increases dust and water resistance to IP68. Fins on the head of the body promote faster heat dissipation, and knurling on the body ensures a secure grip with the flashlight weighing 326 g (with battery). Body dimensions: 188.5 x 68 x 25.4 mm. Impact resistance – up to 1 meter.
