Material and Construction

The plate is made from Armox Advance armor steel by the Swedish concern SSAB. The steel hardness is 58–63 HRC, with a nominal metal thickness of only 5 mm. Thanks to precise machining and a multi-layer construction, the plate meets DSTU Class 4 and exceeds it in some parameters, providing a significantly higher level of protection than ordinary steel inserts.

Ballistic Protection

The plate is certified according to DSTU 8782:2018; each batch undergoes mandatory testing in a certified laboratory, and a certificate valid for 6 months with a test report is issued for the batch. According to test results, the Class 4 armor plate withstands at least one shot from an AKM 7.62×39 rifle with a 57‑BZ‑231 (armor-piercing incendiary) bullet under laboratory conditions. It has also been recorded to withstand the following types of impact:

• SVD rifle, 7.62 mm cartridge 57‑N‑323s (LPS), bullet velocity 850±15 m/s.
• AK‑74 rifle, 5.45 mm cartridge, 7N10s (PP) bullet, velocity 910±15 m/s.

Additionally, the plate withstands shots from 7N6M bullets for the AK‑74. Note: since 1989, the LPS cartridge has been replaced by a cartridge with an ST‑M2 bullet with a core hardness of 65 HRC, analogous to B‑32 in Class 6 — this is an important factor when assessing modern threats.

Anti-fragmentation and Damping Solutions

Lightweight composite materials of proprietary design are used to reduce core and jacket fragment ejection. The front is covered with Ukrainian-made ballistic felt, laminated with a PVC layer for moisture protection; the felt is cut to precise dimensions and pressed using a multi-hour method for reliable adhesion. The side edging is made of material with a density of 800 kgm³ and is pressed together with the plate for an hour and a half — this significantly reduces the risk of lateral core ejection when the edge of the plate is hit. Behind the plate, an 8 mm thick EVA damper with a density of 80 kgm³ is installed, which hardly deforms over time and better mitigates behind-armor blunt trauma compared to standard dampers made of foamed polyethylene with a density of 30–35 kgm³. Thanks to this, the armor plate demonstrates minimal behind-armor deformation when hit by sniper rifle rounds, such as the SVD.

Size Chart and Purpose

The SAPI line includes 5 sizes, allowing for the selection of the optimal plate for various body types. Size M (Medium) — 245×320 mm — is suitable for men with a chest circumference up to 112 cm and women with a nipple distance of 226 to 245 mm.
