Materials and Construction

The plate is made of Armox Advance armor steel from the Swedish concern SSAB, with a hardness of 58–63 HRC and a nominal thickness of 5 mm. Thanks to proper heat treatment and machining of this steel, the plate demonstrates performance that meets and even exceeds Class 4 according to DSTU: in laboratory conditions, the plate withstands at least one shot from an AKM 7.62x39 (57-BZ-231 bullet, armor-piercing incendiary).

Anti-fragmentation and Protective Layers

The front of the plate is covered with Ukrainian-made ballistic felt, laminated with a PVC layer for moisture protection. The felt is cut to precise dimensions and pressed for several hours, ensuring a strong bond with the metal. The side edging is made of material with a density of 800 kg/m³, pressed for an hour and a half, and significantly reduces the lateral exit of the core when struck near the edge of the plate.

Backface Trauma Mitigation

Behind each plate, an 8 mm thick EVA damper with a density of 80 kg/m³ is installed. Unlike standard dampers made of foamed polyethylene or rubber with a density of 30–35 kg/m³, our damper hardly deforms over time and more effectively reduces backface trauma. This ensures minimal backface deformation when struck by sniper rifle rounds, such as the SVD.

Ballistic Characteristics

According to DSTU, Class 4 armor plates withstand: SVD rifle, 7.62-mm cartridge 57-N-323s (LPS) with a bullet velocity of 850±15 m/s; AK-74 assault rifle, 5.45 mm cartridge, 7N10s bullet with a velocity of 910±15 m/s. Additionally, the plate withstands AKM 7.62x39, 57-BZ-231 bullet (armor-piercing incendiary) in a steel jacket with a heat-strengthened core, as well as AK-74 with 5.45 mm cartridge, 7N6M bullet. Note: in some cases, ST-M2 cartridge with a 65 HRC core (analogous to B-32 bullet for Class 6 protection) is used instead of LPS.
