Description and purpose

The standard 4th class armor plate "Arsenal Patriota" is designed as a balanced solution for those who need reliable protection with optimal weight and cost. Each plate in the set weighs approximately 3.6 kg, making it suitable for combat and tactical tasks where lightness and maneuverability are important. The plates are designed for a long service life and to withstand typical conditions of use.

Material and construction

The armor steel used is Miilux Protection 500 from the Finnish manufacturer, with a nominal steel thickness of 6.5 mm and a hardness of 500 Brinell units. The front surface of each plate is covered with Ukrainian-made ballistic felt, cut to precise dimensions and pressed into the plate: the felt is held in the press for several hours, which guarantees strong adhesion and prevents delamination even after six hits.

Anti-fragmentation and damping properties

Lightweight, proprietary materials are used to suppress fragments and spall. An 8 mm thick EVA damper with a density of 80 kg/m³ is installed on the back of the plate. Unlike traditional dampers made of foamed polyethylene or rubber with a density of 30–35 kg/m³, the EVA damper practically does not deform over time and provides better performance in reducing behind-armor blunt trauma; 4th class "Standard" armor plates do not have noticeable behind-armor deformation.

Shape, dimensions, and ergonomics

The plate has standard dimensions of 25x30 cm with an anatomical curve across the width, adapted to the shape of the chest. The cut corners do not restrict movement and allow for comfortable firing from small arms. The total thickness of the plate, including the coating, is 22 mm.

Certification and testing

Each armor plate belongs to a specific batch, has a unique number and production date. Batches undergo testing in a certified laboratory for compliance with DSTU 8782:2018 under normal conditions. Based on the test results, a certificate for the batch is issued for a period of 6 months from the date of issue; the test protocol is attached to the certificate. Additional technical information (according to DSTU)

Technical materials indicate that, according to DSTU, higher-class armor plates withstand specific types of damage: for comparison, it is stated that 5th class protection withstands, in particular, the SVD rifle and 7.62-mm cartridge 57-N-323s (LPS) with a steel jacket and steel core at a bullet velocity of 850±15 m/s; similarly, characteristics are given for AK-74 (5.45 mm) assault rifle cartridges with 7N10s bullets at a velocity of 910±15 m/s. The text also mentions that since 1989, the ST-M2 cartridge with a core hardness of 65 HRC (an analogue of the B-32 bullet for 6th class protection) has been used instead of LPS. Additionally, it is stated that the plate withstands AK-74 automatic cartridges, 5.45 mm, 7N6M bullet.

Comparison with ceramic plates

Ceramic armor plates have two main disadvantages: they are generally single-use and require immediate replacement after the first hit, whereas armor steel plates can withstand multiple shots and do not require urgent replacement. Ceramics exhibit greater behind-armor deformation, which, without an additional ballistic package, can lead to severe injuries. Armor steel plates distribute energy over a surface rather than a single point, thus having better indicators for reducing trauma.
