Brief Description and Purpose

The SAPI "Extra Large" 285x355 mm armor plate from Arsenal Patriota is an optimal combination of protection and ergonomics, designed for a wide range of users, including petite women and men. The model name and characteristics comply with SAPI standards. The weight of one plate is 4.2 kg, and the weight of a set of two plates is 8.4 kg. Materials and Construction

The plate is made of 5 mm thick Armox Advance ballistic steel from the global manufacturer SSAB, with a hardness of 58–63 HRC. This construction complies with DSTU Class 4 and has an additional margin of safety: the plate withstands at least one shot from an AKM 7.62x39 with a 57-BZ-231 bullet even under harsh laboratory conditions. The front part is covered with Ukrainian-made ballistic felt, laminated with PVC film for moisture protection. The felt is cut to precise dimensions and pressed for several hours to ensure strong adhesion to the metal.

The side edging is made of material with a density of 800 kg/m3 and is pressed in a special device for an hour and a half to minimize the lateral exit of the core when hitting the edge of the plate. Behind the plate, an 8 mm thick EVA damper with a density of 80 kg/m3 is installed, which hardly deforms over time and better reduces uncontrolled trauma upon impact compared to foamed materials with a density of 30–35 kg/m3.

Shape, Dimensions, and Ergonomics

Standard SAPI size: 285x355 mm; the description also indicates the actual anatomical size of 285x360 mm with an anatomical curve across the width to match the chest shape. The cut corners do not restrict movement and allow comfortable use of firearms. The thickness of the plate with full coating is 21 mm. The protection area is 9.8 dm3. The plates are tested in a certified laboratory according to DSTU 8782:2018; a certificate for a batch valid for 6 months and test protocols are issued and available on the product page. According to DSTU, a Class 4 armor plate withstands the following impacts:

• SVD, 7.62-mm cartridge 57-N-323s (LPS) — bullet velocity 850±15 m/s.
• AK-74, 5.45 mm, bullet 7N10s (PP) — bullet velocity 910±15 m/s.

Additionally, the plate withstands AKM 7.62x39 with a 57-BZ-231 (armor-piercing incendiary) bullet, as well as a 5.45x39 cartridge with a 7N6M bullet. The note states that since 1989, the ST-M2 cartridge with a core hardness of 65 HRC, similar to the B-32 bullet for Class 6 protection, has been produced instead of LPS.

Advantages of Ballistic Steel Plates

Ceramic plates are usually single-use and require immediate replacement after the first impact. Ballistic steel plates can withstand multiple shots and do not require immediate replacement, distributing bullet energy more evenly across the surface, which reduces the risk of severe internal injuries. The lower backface deformation of ballistic steel contributes to reduced trauma compared to ceramics.
