The dressing is saturated with the auxiliary medicinal substance novocaine (procaine; 2-(diethylamino)ethyl 4-aminobenzoate hydrochloride), which provides local anesthesia and reduces pain in complex wounds.

Mechanism of Action and Composition

Novocaine in the dressing has increased anesthetic activity and a wide therapeutic spectrum. As a weak base, it blocks sodium channels and displaces calcium from receptors on the inner surface of membranes, preventing the generation of impulses in sensitive nerve endings and their conduction along nerve fibers. This changes the action potential in nerve cell membranes without a pronounced effect on the resting potential and inhibits the conduction of impulses of various modalities. The concentration of novocaine in the dressing does not exceed 1%.
