Application

In penetrating chest wall injuries and open pneumothorax, the pleural cavity communicates with the external environment, as a result of which the pressure in it equalizes with atmospheric pressure. This leads to the inability to maintain the negative pressure necessary for lung expansion, resulting in lung collapse and impaired blood gas exchange. First aid for open pneumothorax requires immediate airtight closure of the wound site with an airtight dressing — in this case, the non-vented occlusive dressing from the kit is used. If tension pneumothorax has developed or is suspected, a vented dressing is added, which prevents air from entering the pleural cavity but at the same time allows already accumulated air to exit, reducing the risk of fluctuating pressure increase in the chest.
