Key Design Features

• Shortened barrel: In the 98k model, the barrel length is approximately 600 mm instead of 740 mm in the standard Mauser 98, making the carbine more compact and convenient for transport and maneuvering.
• Bolt: The bolt handle is bent downwards for a more comfortable grip and faster operation.
• Stock: The reduced stock length and the presence of a recess for the bolt handle provide a more ergonomic configuration.
• Eyelet in the buttstock: A metal disc in the through-hole of the buttstock serves as a stop when disassembling the bolt, facilitating maintenance of the replica.

The SG 42 model with a length of 30 cm and a blade of 17.6 cm is also known, but it did not become widespread in serial production. For convenient barrel cleaning, Mauser 98k had very short cleaning rods (standard 25 cm or 35 cm), which had to be screwed together to form a working length for cleaning the barrel bore.

Sniper Variants and Ammunition

Sniper versions of the Mauser 98k were obtained by selecting standard rifle specimens that yielded the best shot groups. For sniper shooting, special SmE (Spitzgeschoss mit Eisenkern) cartridges were used — bullets with a pointed nose and a steel core, which allowed for higher penetration and flight stability.
